Students should use graphic organizers to represent knowledge and talk about them. Venn diagrams, charts, webs, and timelines, can be designed to make complex content more understandable for ELLs. Textbooks can often be too complicated for these students. Graphic organizers help them understand knowledge and store it in another way.

Kindergarten (Spiders)
Students created a graphic organizer with a spider in the middle and facts as legs from the body of the spider.

Language arts (intermediate)
Create KWL chart about wolves after previewing non-fiction book. Students then created an informal outline using details from the text. Next step will be to use informal outline to create a piece of writing to be peer edited.

First grade (Force/Gravity)
Diagram push, pull, and gravity as it pertains to sledding.

Language Arts
Students use a Quick Sketch graphic organizer to plan a story. On the organizer they may draw pictures, use words and short phrases, or both to plan a story. The organizer helps them plan the beginning, middle, and end of their stories.
